I recently wrapped upwardly a hectic decorating challenge where I completely transformed our primary bedroom in five short weeks. I've already talked a lot about how much prettier the room looks, merely I haven't had much of a chance to rave about how much more organized it is. Back during the start week of the challenge, I spent a weekend purging and organizing clothing. Information technology is of import to me that our bedroom non only look beautiful, but also organized and functional.

Here's a great overview of the KonMari method of organizing clothing. Love the folding technique.

If you missed last calendar week's post, I recently read The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo. Although I was skeptical, the volume is filled with some very helpful advice for organizing your dwelling house. I shared the iv big lessons I learned from the book last calendar week, one of which was to organize by category and non past room. There is a very specific gild in which y'all are to tackle the categories, and the kickoff 1 is clothing. After finishing the book, I was fired upward to organize our clothes like never earlier.

For many months, I would get dressed for work in the morning time and stare at our packed closet. Most people would probably say it looked organized, merely I was fed upwardly with it. There were many items that I would pass over every day, thinking to myself that one of these weekends I needed to purge a agglomeration of article of clothing. I had fashion too many things that didn't fit quite correct or needed mending, but I couldn't bear to role with them and then I left them in the closet where they would stare back at me every morning. I knew I needed to do a big purge, but I just kept pushing it off.

Wow! She went all out organizing her clothes following the KonMari Method. Look at that heap of clothing! It's amazing to see how much more organized her clothes in both her closet and dresser are now. Totally need to do this myself.

Oh, and did I mention my dresser was overflowing as well? Everything was haphazardly piled in the drawers. My underwear/sock drawer was a complete mess, and there were way too many crumpled up T-shirts taking up space.

In add-on to my dresser, I had two tubs of old T-shirts nether our bed, a tub of seasonal clothing stashed in another cupboard, sweatshirts hung in our entry closet and a few drawers of one-time T-shirts stashed abroad in our basement. I'grand embarrassed to admit I'd completely forgotten about all the shirts in the basement! Nosotros moved in over a year and a half ago, and I haven't touched them since soon after nosotros moved into the firm. Those shirts were totally out of sight, out of my heed and I clearly didn't have a need for them.

Reading about the KonMari Method was just the motivation I needed to organized my vesture. Then I gear up out to organize the heck out of my closet and dresser.

Organizing Clothing The KonMari Way

ane | Round upwards every wear.

Eager to put the KonMari Method into practise, I gathered every single article of my clothing from around the firm and heaped them on our bed. I figured if they were on the bed, I would be motivated to finish the task that mean solar day and then I could actually go to sleep. It was astonishing to come across everything piled upwardly in ane identify. How does i person mayhap accumulate so many apparel? I was anxious to get rid of the excess.

2 | Sort items one by one.

Anxious to become rid of some of that huge pile, I began sorting through each commodity of article of clothing. Kondo is very specific nearly holding an item in your easily and deciding if it sparks a feeling of joy. While I didn't go as far equally to thank my apparel for a job well washed equally every bit suggests yous do every bit yous discard things, I did thoughtfully consider how each item made me feel.

Many were very easy to throw into the discard or donate bags. They were items that had never fit quite correct, odd colors of things I'd bought on sale, shirts with snags in them, etc. I had no problem letting go of them.

But there were others that I struggled with. They were things I hardly ever wore, but were in actually good condition. How can yous justify discarding something that'due south in perfectly good shape? Just I ultimately realized that they didn't spark whatever kind of joy in me, which is why I never wore those things. Conspicuously, they needed to go. Those were the things that I put into a handbag to take to the consignment store, things that were in crawly shape just I merely didn't beloved. As the book instructs, I decided they had served their purpose and they could move onto some other life in the cupboard of someone else.

Here's a good picture that shows how to fold and organize clothing following the KonMari Method.

A tidbit from the book that was really helpful to me was the department titled "downgrading to 'loungewear' is taboo." I have drawers and drawers of sometime college T-shirts and ripped jeans. I go on them around to wear effectually the house when no one'south effectually or when I'thousand working on a messy project. Just Kondo warns against this, and I do understand her logic. She says that you should ever honey your article of clothing, fifty-fifty the clothes you lot clothing around the house when you are lone.

I clearly had an excessive number of T-shirts, and it was easy to part with many of them. In fact, I only ended upward keeping a few dainty college shirts that I volition really wear in public. I tossed all of those one-time shirts from events and clubs. They just didn't have a purpose in my life anymore. I allowed myself to salve two old shirts and two bottoms to save every bit painting clothes since I'yard a terribly messy painter ;).

iii | Fold article of clothing into rectangles.

Kondo suggests folding nearly everything and storing information technology all in drawers, because folded clothing takes upward far less infinite than hanging clothes do. I chose to hang upward all of my work tops and bottoms and neatly folded the residuum in my dresser drawers.

A key principle of the KonMari Method is the manner in which you fold your clothing. She recommends folding them into a uncomplicated rectangle and so they tin stand up upward in your drawer, assuasive you to come across everything at one time. This is too supposed to assist your clothes "breathe" and preclude them from wrinkling like they do if they are buried at the bottom of a pile of clothing. Here'southward a nifty YouTube video that shows how to fold your clothing into rectangles that can be stacked on terminate like books.

Information technology felt so amazing to see all of my clothing folded neatly into drawers! And this way of folding did accept upwards less space, which fabricated extra room in a couple of my drawers. I love being able to see everything, rather than things being cached under each other. It looks then neat and tidy!

Here's a great overview of the KonMari method of organizing clothing. Love the folding technique.

The one aspect of the folding method that I was skeptical about was folding socks, underwear and tights into rectangles. Just I decided to requite it a endeavour, and I volition acknowledge that everything looks much neater this way.

I used a couple erstwhile shoe boxes every bit dividers in my drawer, and folded each detail into a rectangle before standing it on end. This is a vast improvement from the mess I had going on in this drawer before. I didn't even fold these things before, I simply shoved them in the drawer and dug through the mess every twenty-four hours. Now I open my underwear drawer with a smile. It sounds strange, but an organized line of socks and underwear makes it much easier to run into your options.

4 | Hang up everything else.

After I had folded the bulk of my clothing, it was fourth dimension to hang up the rest. The KonMari Method suggests organizing clothing in your closet from the "heaviest" items (long length, heavy cloth, dark in colour) on the left to the "lighter" items (curt length, lite material, lite in color) on the right.

I followed this advice fairly closely. I offset hung dresses on the far left end of the rod since they are the longest. They are also things I don't habiliment as frequently, which is why I keep them in the back of the closet.

Since I'thou an organizing nerd, I've ever color-coded my closet. But to more closely follow Kondo's technique, I decided to group long sleeve tops together so group the rest of my tops adjacent. Both sections of tops are colour coded from darkest on the left to lightest on the right.

Kondo too includes shoes, numberless and accessories in the vesture category. I organized my shoes in our closet and threw out quite a few worn out sneakers and heels that hurt as well much to ever realistically article of clothing.

If I truly wanted to follow the method, I should take folded all of my scarves into a drawer. But I love my hanging scarf organizer on the inside of my cupboard door, and then they stayed put.

I'll admit I didn't tackle bags and jewelry, so those volition accept to expect for some other 24-hour interval.

This took the better part of a weekend to complete, only it was so worth information technology! I ended up with two garbage bags to throw, two to donate and one to consign. It's incredible to think I had that much excess stuff cluttering my closet and dresser!

At present I have a fabulously organized closet and dresser. Information technology makes it so much easier to get ready in the mornings. Everything is swell and tidy and in that location'due south really some animate room at present. Organizing vesture is well worth the effort!

I am then happy with the result of this organizing projection! I finally have a wardrobe of clothing that I love, rather than a mess of clothes I sort of like. Keeping only the items that spark joy makes it much simpler to cull an outfit for the 24-hour interval because I like everything in my closet. If yous oasis't read The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, information technology'south definitely worth a read.
